Sports Raves: Multiform at The Broad (2026)

What?

Sports Raves: Multiform offered two exhilarating weekends of participatory games on the outdoor grounds of The Broad on Saturday and Sunday, 20–21 June and 27–28 June 2026.
Previously presented alongside the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games, Multiform is a new team sport game, with transformable uniforms and alternative sports fields. It encourages players to negotiate, resist and alter existing social power structures and body norms through embodied learning.

Why?

This iteration of Multiform was commissioned to ran during FIFA World Cup 2026 and in conjunction with The Broad's special exhibition, Yoko Ono: Music of The Mind. Sports Raves: Multiform attendees were also invited to interact with Ono's White Chess Set (1966), where "opponents" developed alternate strategies for an all-white chess set — a similar approach to that of the one-way foosball table developed by Gabriel Fontana for the SIDELINED exhibition at the 2025 Venice Biennale.

How?

These daytime events unfolded on a custom-designed playing field where participants joined one of three teams that intermingled as uniforms transformed and alliances blurred over the course of each match. Together, we re-thought the "us vs. them" binary typical in competitive sports, while the action was elevated by KCRW DJs, guided warm-up ceremonies with inclusive fitness gurus, live commentators, bleachers to cheer from, and a sports bar with specialty cocktails and refreshments.
